Mindfulness Attitudinal Qualities and How to Cultivate Them

Updated: Feb 12, 2023

What are the attitudes we should have in order to practice mindfulness effectively? This post explores the five key attitudes of mindfulness and how they can help us live more mindfully.

Mindfulness is a state of being in which we are aware of the present moment experience without judgment or attachment. This practice involves cultivating certain attitudinal qualities, such as non-judging, curiosity, kindness and compassion, understanding of impermanence, and non-attachment. But how can we cultivate these qualities in our daily lives? Let’s explore how to build these mindfulness attitudinal qualities into our experiences.

Non-Judging

In order to be mindful, it's important to have an open mind free from any preconceived notions or judgments about ourselves or our experiences. It is natural for us to form opinions about ourselves as we undergo different experiences; however, it is important to remember that not every opinion needs to be acted upon nor taken seriously. Instead of judging yourself or your experience, take this opportunity to observe what is happening without passing harsh judgments on yourself. Once you become more comfortable with not judging yourself or your experience, you can begin to extend that same sentiment towards others as well.

Curiosity

One of the most important aspects of mindfulness is curiosity. When we approach our present moment experience with curiosity rather than judgment, it allows us to open ourselves up to the possibilities that the current moment may offer us. Curiosity leads us away from forcing a solution onto a problem and instead encourages us to explore all the different options available before making a decision. Being curious also helps us become more engaged in our experience; by looking at situations or tasks from different perspectives, we can find new solutions that are beneficial for everyone involved.

Kindness & Compassion

It is also essential for mindfulness practitioners to have an attitude of kindness and compassion towards themselves and others during their practice. When we practice kindness and compassion towards ourselves and those around us, it helps create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and accepted no matter their differences or similarities. Kindness also encourages us not only look at our own experiences but recognize what other people may be going through as well; this allows us to connect with them on a deeper level than if we were just focused on ourselves.

Understanding Impermanence

Being mindful means understanding that nothing lasts forever—including moments of joy or sadness—which can help foster acceptance within ourselves and those around us during difficult times in life. By recognizing impermanence in all aspects of life, whether good or bad, it encourages us not only appreciate each moment for its unique beauty but also learn from past mistakes so that they don’t happen again in the future. Accepting impermanence also helps reduce stress because it eliminates expectations from situations that are out of our control; this leaves room for peace within ourselves knowing that whatever happens will eventually pass over time as long as we remain mindful throughout the process.

Non-Attachment

The last attitudinal quality associated with mindfulness is non-attachment—the idea that although things may come into your life (or leave your life), you are still able to stay grounded in yourself regardless of what happens outside of you due to external factors such as other people’s actions or circumstances beyond your control. Non-attachment allows you freedom from attachments while still allowing yourself space to focus on what really matters most: living life fully in each moment without expectation or attachment as best possible during any given situation..

Mindfulness has become increasingly popular due to its many benefits including improved mental health outcomes such as increased awareness and decreased anxiety levels among many others (Goyal et al., 2014). Developing these attitudes plays an integral part in helping cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness which can then be used for further personal growth and development moving forward (Kabat-Zinn & Santorelli 2007).
